Background
Isle of Wight County was most likely named for the Isle of Wight off the south coast of England. It was first known as Warrosquyoake and was one of the eight shires established in 1634. The present name was given in 1637. Part of Nansemond County was added in 1769. Its area is 319 square miles, and the county seat is Isle of Wight.

Overview
The earliest Gilliam mentioned in regard to the Isle of Wight is George Gillin. He was one of thirty persons transported by Lt. John Upton. Upton received a patent for 1500 acres in 1638.
Not until nearly another 75 years does a Gilliam appear. Beginning in 1714 numerous patents are issued to Capt. Hinchea Gilliam and John Gilliam particularly along the Nottoway River, Raccoon Swamp, and the Maherrin River. Capt. Hinchea Gilliam and John Gilliam are the sons of John Gilliam ( -1673) and Margery. An extensive description may be found under Surry County. This line of Gilliams will figure prominently in Southside Virginia.

Thomas Gilliam, son of Capt. Hinchea Gilliam, also receives land along the Nottoway.
It is likely that another, Thomas Gilliam, who leaves a Will in Chowan, NC, who marries Sarah the widow of William Woolward, who was formerly the wife of Herman Joyner of Isle of Wight, has roots in Isle of Wight for according to the headrights Book of the NC Colonial Records William and Sarah Woolward were transported to the Chowan Precinct of Albemarle Co, NC by John Overton in a party of 12 people including Thomas Gilliam, for which Overton received 600 acres of land. This Thomas is likely a near relative of Thomas Gilliam who arrived with John in 1635. As this Thomas dies in 1702. The Thomas of early Isle of Wight records must be his son, for Thomas, son of Hinchea would have been of age at the time of the signing of some of below deeds. This Thomas “Jr” is associated with Josh Cland/Joseph Claud and Thomas Francis.
A Robert Gilliam likely formerly of Isle of Wight ends up in Southampton where he patents land after a portion of Isle of Wight is cut off and becomes Southampton County.
Thomas Gilliam who married Winny Whitley of Southampton lives in the Isle of Wight during the 1860s before returning to Southampton.
Thomas Quincy Gilliam of New Kent settles in Isle of Wight by 1870. He should not be confused with Thomas above.

To eldest son John Vpton, all that tract of land being part of it in the tenure of John King, James Bagnall, Nicholas Morris, etc., containing in the whole eight hundred and fifty acres, and if the said John Vpton dies before he comes to the age of one and twenty, then I give and bequeath the said land until William, Elizabeth, Sarah and Margaret Vnderood, to be divided as followeth, &c., To said son a mare fole and one cow with calf, being upon the probate of my will sett apart for him with their increase to be equally shared amongst my daughters-in-law Elizabeth, Sarah and Margaret Vnderwood. "To William Vnderwood, Elizabeth, Sarah and Margaret Vnderwood 1500 acres near Ambrose Bennett's and allways reserved out of this land Three Hundred acres with Mr. Robert Bracewell hath. To William, Elizabeth, Sarah and Margaret Vnderwood all my land at Rappahannock, &c. All the rest of my Estate, Goods, Chattels, servants, &c., to whatsoever here in Virginia after my Debts, Legacies and funerall rights paid and discharged I give &c. to my Loving and Welbeloved Wife Margaret Vpton, whom I constitute &c. sole executrix of this my last Will and Testament." Robert Braswell [or Bracell] his heirs-Daughter Jane Stockes, sons Robert & Richard: Guardian of children Richard Izard & Geo. Gwillen. Gave to Richard Izard a gold ring. Died possessed of 700 acres of land, a mill and many negroes.
